SO WHY THIS SITE?
Well, basically, we started making this site three years ago, in 2007, when we (the admins Amanderp and Caitllama) were just getting out of high school. I don't remember exactly how it started, but Caitllama and I were walking to my house after school and discussing how, in many superhero films and comics, the hero would save the city/planet/universe, but would cause millions and millions of dollars in property damage. The city would be destroyed, and rebuilt just in time for the villains to try again next week. And there was no mention whatsoever of public outcry against the taxes to repair the buildings week after week after week. So we figured, it'd be really fun to put together a game where we get to explore a little more realistic view of the superhero myth. We specifically had an idea of what it would be like to be a band of superheroes just starting out; we wanted to explore monetary struggles, fighting for time with normal daily activities and busting crime, and what it would be like to win your first encounter with a criminal, however far down the pecking order.
We wanted to put together a game where it was more fun to have characters get super excited because they won the reward of free meat from a shop because they saved its patrons from an armed criminal; Superman is too jaded. He will save the planet from a giant robot-brain alien monster from the year 4532, and just be like, "No big deal, Metropolis. Deuces." And then he'll fly away and go play with his menagerie of weird-ass alien animals in an iceberg somewhere. That's fun for the viewers, maybe, but to play a character like that? Boring! Those situations are fun for the viewers, because they're not thrust into Superman's blasé mindset; for all they know, he's busy planning what to make for dinner, and forming a grocery list as he's throwing punches at some of the most overpowered villains of all time. But playing a character like Superman is doing just that, and that's not what we want. We want to play with someone who has a childlike wonder at hitting someone for the first time and getting away with it, or even seeing their description in the newspaper for doing a good deed. I mean, can you imagine? So awesome!
We want you to be able to play someone to whom the whole world is open, and everything is new and exciting. If you want to play a more jaded character, one who's been around the block a few times, then go for it -- however, we prefer new kids on the block to the Batmen and Supermen; that's the point of building this game, after all! We want to mix Hancock with X-Men; we want the vigilante persecution that Hancock faced, the outrage at the collateral damage and the effects onWalter the whalethe citizens who have to deal with funding the rebuilding of whole skyscrapers, but we don't want the characters to be angel or God-like figures like Hancock was. We want more like mutants -- characters who happen to have some genetic mutation that give them wacky powers. We want to bring the learning and the excitement in from X-Men, the idea of making things up as you go along. We want moral ambiguity, we want real people. Well, within reason, once again. Having a completely realistic game would probably just mean the government would condemn the city because of all its mutant freaks and inter-city warring, steal some brains for science, and then blow up the survivors. That would be boring only because the government would probably win. If we were going to do something like that, it would give your mutant friends a fighting chance! But let's not get too much into that.
And though we mention canon sources like Superman, Hancock, and the X-Men, this game is going to be an original setting with completely original characters. We don't want any canon characters from any setting; if you can take an original character from a particular canon without making it completely obvious that he or she is, say, a ninja from Konoha, or Jedi Youngling, then go for it! We want to bring out your own creativity and be a little challenging while still being super fun.
Those things said, we want to keep this game relatively small and intimate so that we don't have to worry about creating huge plots all the time, or keeping up on applications and activities, because that ruins the fun for us as admins, as well. But we want to have different people playing all kinds of different characters and bringing in amazing perspectives that we don't get to see. Be villains, be superheroes, be the next James Jamerson. Invite your friends, and be awesome, and we'll all get along and be besties!
tl;dr We want you to have a lot of fun playing superheroes with us, and we love you! ♥
